<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photocatalyst which consists of a metal oxide such as titanium oxide (TiO<SB>2</SB>) and tantalum oxide (Ta<SB>2</SB>O<SB>5</SB>) or a compound obtained by doping the metal oxide with another metal or a nonmetal and in which the utilization efficiency of light is enhanced. <P>SOLUTION: This photocatalyst is provided with: a non-linear optical material layer 4 which is formed on a substrate 2 and generates second higher harmonics with respect to the light of ≥500 nm wavelength; and a photocatalytic material layer 6 which is formed on the non-linear optical material layer and responds mainly to the light of ≤500 nm wavelength. The light of the wavelength shorter than 500 nm in incident light is absorbed directly by the photocatalytic material layer 6 and the light of the wavelength longer than 500 nm is reflected on the surface of the substrate 2 and returned to the photocatalytic material layer 6. The light having the second higher harmonics to be generated while the reflected light transmits the non-linear optical material layer 4 is absorbed by the photocatalytic material layer 6. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
