PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for protecting neurons from enhanced cellular death caused by wounds, diseases, symptoms of aging or combination thereof. SOLUTION: A usage of an estrogen compound for manufacturing a pharmaceutical composition which protects a neural population in an animal subject from progressive cell wounding resulting in cellular death, is provided. In a preferable embodiment of the prevent invention, the effective dose of estrogen compound sufficient for protecting the neural population from cell wounding which is progressive and results in cellular death or which is caused without intervention, is administered to the neural population in the animal subject.
