PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology capable of extracting thumbnail pictures with a higher index function and arranging thumbnail pictures of each title recorded on a recording medium to be easily understandable pictures such as program title pictures. SOLUTION: When a user selects one of a plurality of titles and sets a reference thumbnail picture Si (Sa), the selected thumbnail picture Si is extracted as reference fragmental information (reference frame), and its frame number is stored in a memory S[i] (i=0) (S1, S2). Then correlations between frames of objective titles T[1] to T[Tn] and the reference thumbnail picture Si are respectively obtained and a frame number of a frame with the highest correlation is automatically detected and stored in the memory S[i].
