PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrochromic element whose response speed is high to light of a variety of wavelengths. SOLUTION: An electrochromic element has a semiconductor material and an electrochromic material. The semiconductor material is a nano-porous semiconductor material whose roughness coefficient is 20 or larger, and it has at least one kind of electrochromic materials shown in formulas (1), (2) or (3) on the surface of the semiconductor material. In these formulas, V<SB>1</SB>through V<SB>24</SB>are a hydrogen atom or a monohydric substituent respectively; R<SB>1</SB>through R<SB>6</SB>are a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an aryl group or a heterocyclic ring group respectively; L<SB>1</SB>through L<SB>6</SB>are a methine group or a nitrogen atom respectively; n<SB>1</SB>through n<SB>3</SB>are 0, 1, 2 or 3 respectively; M<SB>1</SB>through M<SB>3</SB>are electric charge balance pair ions; m<SB>1</SB>through m<SB>1</SB>are figures each of which is 0 or larger and is needed to neutralize electric charges of molecules. When n<SB>1</SB>through n<SB>3</SB>are 0, R<SB>1</SB>through R<SB>6</SB>show an aryl group respectively, and the compounds in the formulas (1) through (3) have at least one from a sulfo group, a phosphono group or a phosphato group respectively.
