PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control method for an auto tensioner capable of preventing flapping of a belt when starting auxiliary machinery having large load. SOLUTION: A tensioner main body 29 of the auto tensioner 17 is locked so as to prevent its contraction when starting an engine E by a starter motor 15 to increase tensile force of the belt 28 in order to start the engine E securely by preventing wild run of the belt 28. The tensioner main body 29 can be expanded and contracted after starting the engine E to give proper tensile force to the belt 28 by springing force of a spring energizing the tensioner main body 29 in the direction of elongation. When a start signal for starting a compressor 13 for air conditioning is outputted, the tensioner main body 29 is locked so as to prevent its contraction and prevent wild run of the belt 28 so that the compressor 13 for air conditioning is started smoothly. Then, after predetermined time elapses, the tensioner main body 29 can be automatically expanded and contracted to adjust tensile force of the belt 28 by springing force of the spring.
