PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide genes concerning apoptosis or the differentiation or proliferation of nerve cells and to provide a method for evaluating a compound controlling these activities by using these genes and these proteins encoded by these genes.

SOLUTION: As genes concerning apoptosis or the differentiation or proliferation of nerve cells, genes HJ06972 and AF06972 are identified. These genes encode proteins having activities of inducing cell death or the differentiation or proliferation of nerve cells. These proteins have potent activities of inducing the differentiation or proliferation of nerve cells. Based on these genes or proteins encoded thereby, a method for evaluating a compound having an activity of inducing these activities is provided.
