PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel liquid crystal element for keeping the thickness of a liquid crystal layer without lowering element performance, when a liquid crystal is expanded/contracted. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal element 1 includes a plurality of substrates 10 and 11, forming a segment electrode 20 and a common electrode 21, and the liquid crystal 40 sandwiched in between the plurality of the substrates 10 and 11. The liquid crystal element is provided with a follow-up member 70 deformed, in response to expansion/contraction of the liquid crystal 40 on the substrate 10. More specifically, the bowl-like following member 70, consisting of a resin along a hole 60, is fitted to the substrate 10 by forming the hole 60 which communicates with the liquid crystal 40.
