A two-stroke piston engine (3A) has a cylinder (2) with a piston (K) for driving a crankshaft (1) via a con-rod (P). The crankshaft uses two pulleys (RS) and a toothed belt (11) running round the pulleys to drive a camshaft (12) with no slippage. Operating an inlet valve (7) releases a compressed air supply (CAS) and closes it at a second defined phase angle so as to lock the CAS for a cylinder. An independent claim is also included for a valve that has a valve body with a valve head, a valve shank protruding from the valve head and a valve foot on the valve shank with a clearance from the valve head.
