PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To providing a recording/reproducing method or the like for applying optimum PRML signal processing to a magnetic recording medium the magnetic layer of which includes hexagonal ferrite. SOLUTION: The recording/reproducing apparatus 10 for recording and reproducing an information signal recorded on the magnetic recording medium 20 whose magnetic layer includes the hexagonal ferrite by using the PR (1, a, b, c, d) ML signal processing system is equipped with: an equalizer 15; a maximum likelihood decoder 16; and a decoder 17 or the like. Then the coefficients a, b, c, d of the PR (1, a, b, c, d) respectively satisfy conditions of 0.1≤a<2.0, -0.9≤b<0.0, -2.0<c≤-0.3, and -1.0<d≤-0.1. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
