PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a field sequential liquid crystal display device capable of displaying a high-quality color image without color slurring and flickering. SOLUTION: The field sequential liquid crystal display device divides each of the three fields divided from one frame into two periods, respectively; writing a unit color image data of one color among red, green, and blue to the pixels of each odd-numbered pixel row of liquid crystal display elements during 1st division periods t<SB>1a</SB>, t<SB>2a</SB>, t<SB>3a</SB>of each field, to make a part corresponding to each odd-numbered pixel row display a one-color unit color image by letting a surface light source emit illumination light in a color corresponding to the unit color image data; writing a reset data to the pixels of each even-numbered pixel row, to reset the preceding written state of these pixels; writing a reset data to the pixels of each odd numbered pixel row, to reset the preceding written state of these pixels during 2nd division periods t<SB>1b</SB>, t<SB>2b</SB>, t<SB>3b</SB>of each field, to reset the preceding written state of these pixels; and writing a unit color image data of one color among red, green, and blue to the pixels of each even-numbered pixel row, to make a part corresponding to each even-numbered pixel row display a one-color unit color image by letting a surface light source emit illumination light in a color corresponding to the unit color image data.
