PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of correctly detecting the head end or the rear end of a film, i.e. the position of the film itself in a film carrying path, clearly reading an image and printing it, and ensuring high accuracy for calculation of the length of the film. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus 1 is provided with a carrying mechanism for carrying a photographic film F along a carrying path, a processing mechanism provided on the halfway of the carrying path and for performing processing for the photographic film F, an accommodating space 80 for taking up the photographic film carried along the carrying path and accommodating it, and an image reading mechanism for reading and printing an image formed on the photographic film F. The apparatus 1 has a light-emitting section Sa and a light-receiving section Sb on a position corresponding to the center of the carrying path. The apparatus 1 is provided with a plurality of reflection type optical sensors S having a reflective spot near the surface of the photographic film F, and each of reflection type optical sensors S detects the same end surface of the photographic film F at different reflective spots.
