PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photochromic compound which has a high color density, a high fading rate, and develops a yellow collor. SOLUTION: The compound has a basic structure in which a cyclohexadiene ring is fused to the positions 7 and 8 of a chromene ring and is reprerented, for example, by the formula (wherein R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each an unsubstituted aryl group or an aryl group substituted either with an alkoxy- or alkyl-substituted amino group or with a heterocyclic group having a nitrogen atom as a heteroatom and bonded to the aryl group through the nitrogen atom; R<SP>3</SP>to R<SP>6</SP>are each independenly a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom, provided that R<SP>3</SP>and R<SP>5</SP>may be combined with each other to form an aliphatic hydrocarbon ring; R is an alkoxy group or a heterocyclic ring having a nitrogen atom as a heteroatom and bonded to the aryl group through the nitrogen atom; and m and n are each independently an integer of 1 to 3).
