PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten processing time for reading image information in both the surfaces of a document while restraining the size in a device from increasing. SOLUTION: This device has a switch-back carriage roller 134 and an auxiliary switch-back carriage roller 135 for performing switch-back carriage by chucking the document, a reverse roller 136 for reversing the surface and the back surface of the document, a carriage passage R' for switch-back for communicating between a document reading position A and the switch-back carriage roller 134, document auxiliary carriage passages S1, S2 for communicating between the switch-back carriage roller 134 and the auxiliary switch-back carriage roller 135 with a main document carriage passage R on an upstream side in the document carrying direction of a first carriage roller 131, a reverse passage T1 for communicating between the document reading position A and the reverse roller 136, and a reverse passage T2 for communicating between the reverse roller 136 and the auxiliary switch-back carriage roller 135.
