A fibrous braid is impregnated with a thermoplastic and/or a thermosetting polymer and is heated in order to form a composite of a wide variety of uses. The resulting composite is capable of being machined. The resulting composite can be used to form rings or ring portions which are radiolucent and which can be used in orthopedic braces and bone fixators.
