An aqueous composition for imparting flame resistance to textile materials (see Group VIII) contains (1) from 2 to 20 parts of a heat-curable reaction product of formaldehyde with melamine or urea, an alkylated methylol melamine, an alkylated methylol urea or a mixture thereof; (2) from 10 to 35 parts of a methylol dicyandiamide or a mixture of dicyandiamide and formaldehyde adapted to form methylol dicyandiamide in situ; and (3) an oxygen-containing acid of phosphorus, or a salt and acid adapted to form the same, or a mixture of an ammonium phosphate and formaldehyde or source of formaldehyde, in an amount which is equivalent based on the phosphorus content to from 5 to 30 parts of 85 per cent orthophosphoric acid. Specified for ingredient (3) is orthophosphoric acid, pyrophosphoric acid, metaphosphoric acid, hypophosphoric acid or the phosphorous acids or mixtures thereof. Optional ingredients are glow-retardants, e.g. zinc borate, zinc phosphate, zinc ammonium phosphate, stannic phosphate, phenyl diamide phosphate, melamine pyrophosphate, guanyl urea phosphate or methyl-guanyl urea phosphate; buffering agents, e.g. calcium carbonate, magnesium oxide, or polyalkylene polyamines, e.g. hexamethylene tetramine, metallic oxides, e.g. zirconium, tin, titanium, antimony and bismuth oxides, and halogen-containing thermoplastic substances, e.g. polyvinyl chloride.
|
