摘要

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new liquid crystal compound, and thereby to provide a retardation plate which is of a thin layer and manufacturable by a simple and convenient manufacturing process, and has a reverse wavelength dispersibility like a broad band region λ/4 plate.

SOLUTION: The liquid crystal compound is expressed by the formula, and reveals a nematic phase or a smectic phase, and in which intrinsic birefringence Δn (λ) at wavelength λ of the liquid crystal phase satisfys a specified formula.
