PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suitably perform a control method of an automatic transmission of a vehicle driven by an internal combustion engine in response to a change in travel resistance, for automatically selecting the gear ratio of the transmission by a switching characteristic map SKFj by depending on a position alpha (t) and an engine speed nmot (t) of an output control mechanism, by controlling the internal combustion engine by using the output control mechanism. SOLUTION: A change dv(t)/dt in a travel speed is detected, and an intermediate quantity SKP1(t) is selected over a position of the output control mechanism and a change in the travel speed. The intermediate quantity is determined by using a first characteristic map 21 divided so as to have an area corresponding to ordinary travel in flatland.
