PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing (meth)acrolein or (meth)acrylic acid by carrying out the gas phase catalytic oxidation of propylene, propane, isobutylene, or (meth)acrolein with molecular oxygen or a molecular-oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a compound oxide catalyst by using a multitubular reactor composed of a plurality of reaction tubes packed with a catalyst, which method can produce (meth)acrolein or (meth)acrylic acid in a high yield stably for a long time without encountering markedly lowered catalyst activity due to the localization (localized distribution) of the catalyst. SOLUTION: The method is characterized in that the difference between the temperature of a heating medium and the peak temperature T of a catalyst is 20 to 80°C in the initial stage of the reaction, and the change in the peak temperature of the catalyst along the direction of the tube axis falls within a specified range in the steady-state operation.
