PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out texture pattern detection that is more accurate than using a whole or a fixed area of a concentration transition matrix as is conventional by adaptively acquiring a subset of matrix elements that is optimum for an object in a texture pattern detecting method based upon concentration transition of an image. SOLUTION: In texture characteristics extraction using the whole or a certain area of the concentration transition matrix, an optimum area is determined in adaptation to the object for the purpose of stabilizing characteristics, and improving separation capability from a different category.
