PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a diesel engine, in which an EGR ratio can be quickly controlled in changing premix combustion and ordinary combustion. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a fuel injection device 9, an outer EGR device 19, an inner EGR device 29, and a control device 26 to control the outer EGR device 19 and the inner EGR device 29. In a prescribed operation range, the control device 26 injects fuel earlier than around a top dead center, and executes EGR in relatively large quantity to execute premix combustion. Outside the prescribed operation range, it injects fuel around the top dead center, and executes EGR in small quantity to execute ordinary combustion. The control device 26 controls the EGR ratio by using both the outer EGR device 19 and the inner EGR device 29 in executing premix combustion, and controls the EGR ratio using only the outer EDG device 19 in executing ordinary combustion.
