PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction material for a drum brake easy to be manufactured and hard to be changed by abrasion, and to provide a brake shoe. SOLUTION: When a lining 24 is pushed to a rotary drum 27 when braking, since a coefficient of friction of an end part 36 of the lining 24 to be brought in contact with the rotary drum 27 in preference to other parts, is relatively smaller than that of an intermediate part 34, vibration of the end part 36 to be generated when the end part 36 is pushed to the inner peripheral surface of the rotary drum 27 is restricted, and squeal is restricted. Furthermore, since squeal is restricted by setting a small coefficient of friction in the end part 36 to be strongly pushed to the inner peripheral surface of the rotary drum 27 when braking, even if the lining 24 is worn, squeal restricting effect is hard to be deteriorated.
