PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical resin material which is excellent in optical properties such as transparency and low birefringence and can be produced industrially advantageously, and to provide an optical shaped article obtained by shaping the resin material. SOLUTION: The optical resin material is composed of a norbornene ring-opening polymer hydride having a spiro ring-containing structural unit represented by formula (1), wherein Z denotes a bivalent organic group having at least one selected from an ester bond and an ether bond; R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>denote each independently hydrogen atom, a 1-20C hydrocarbon group, or a group containing a halogen, silicon, oxygen or nitrogen atom; and (n) is 0 or 1. The structural unit is a structural unit [I] which satisfies the relation: b<SB>xx</SB>-(b<SB>yy</SB>+b<SB>zz</SB>)/2<0, wherein b<SB>xx</SB>, b<SB>yy</SB>and b<SB>zz</SB>represent the xx-component, yy-component and zz-component, respectively, of the tensor B that is the sum of a polarizability tensor A<SB>i</SB>obtained by defining the bond direction of the trimer unit of the spiro ring-containing structure as the x-axis.
