PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel oil for a diesel engine having a multi-stage injection mechanism, enabling stable operation of the engine over a wide operation range from low-load to high-load operation, exhausting exhaust gas containing reduced NOx, PM and soot content and effective for improving the fuel cost, and provide a high-performance diesel engine using the fuel oil. SOLUTION: The fuel oil for a diesel engine having a multi-stage injection mechanism has a 90 vol.% distillation temperature of≤400°C and a cetane number of 10-45.
