PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composition for permanently reshaping hair, to provide a practical method, a kit and a compound. SOLUTION: An aqueous reducing composition for a first step of permanently reshaping hair, which contains one or a plurality of dicarboxydithiols represented by formula (I) and/or (II), and/or one or a plurality of organic and inorganic salts thereof as a reduction agent, in a cosmetically acceptable medium, is provided. In the formulae, R<SB>1</SB>, R<SB>2</SB>, R'<SB>1</SB>and R'<SB>2</SB>are each OR<SB>3</SB>or NR<SB>4</SB>R<SB>5</SB>: wherein R<SB>3</SB>is H or a linear or branched 1-5C alkyl group which may be substituted with one or two OR<SB>7</SB>groups (wherein R<SB>7</SB>is H or a 1-3C alkoxy group), R<SB>4</SB>and R<SB>5</SB>are each H or a linear or branched 1-5C alkyl group which may be substituted with one or two groups selected from hydroxy, methoxy, ethoxy, methylamino, ethylamino and dimethylamino groups; R<SB>1</SB>and R<SB>2</SB>are not simultaneously hydroxy groups; R'<SB>1</SB>and R'<SB>2</SB>are not simultaneously hydroxy groups; A is either a (CH<SB>2</SB>)n group (wherein (n) is an integer of 1-4) or a (CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m</SB>-X-(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>p</SB>(wherein (m) is 1 or 2, (p) is 1 or 2, X is O, S, NHCO or NR<SB>6</SB>, R<SB>6</SB>is H or CH<SB>3</SB>).
