PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination device for a projection type display by which the drive of LED light sources can be quickly controlled synchronously with a single CCD light bulb. SOLUTION: In the illumination device for the projection type display, R, G and B light emitted respective LED light sources 11 of R, G and B are synthesized and the synthetic light is ejected to the single CCD light bulb by a synthesizing prism 13, the light emission of the LED light sources 11 is controlled synchronously with the PWM drive control of the single CCD light bulb, and the incident angle (outgoing angle)θ2 and incident (outgoing) size d2 on/from the synthesizing prism 13 through a kaleidoscope when the divergent angleθ1 and size d1 of light from each LED light source 11 are set so that the relation of d1×sinθ1=d2×sinθ2 is formed.
