<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve responsiveness to valve timing at starting, in a construction that valve opening/closing timing when an engine is started is established in timing at starting on a phase advance side rather than the latest phase lag timing. <P>SOLUTION: Variable valve timing is controlled to establish timing at starting when the engine is stopped, and also manipulated variable at this time is memorized as manipulated variable at stopping Ue.
