PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a serial printer in which a blind hitting prevention process to a platen is carried out with a printing quality and a printing time taken into account, and to provide an inkjet type serial printer and a serial printer with the facsimile function. SOLUTION: In the serial printer capable of detecting the presence or absence of sheets and detecting a sheet width so as to prevent blind hitting to the platen, the sheet detection is not conducted in a mode A; only the sheet presence or absence detection is conducted in a mode B; and the sheet presence or absence detection and the sheet width detection are carried out for only the first page, and only the sheet presence or absence detection is carried out for the second page and thereafter in a mode C. Both the sheet presence or absence detection and the sheet width detection are carried out in a mode D. The mode D is set for FAX data (S30: YES). The mode A is selected in the case where a priority is given to the printing time (S31: YES). The mode D is selected in the case where a priority is given to the printing quality (S32: YES).
