A diamond-like thin film (a DLC film) is formed on the surface of a base whi ch is composed of an inorganic material such as a ceramic or an organic materia l such as a resin, and the surface of the DLC film is processed and activated using a plasma or the like. Various monomers having biocompatibility and the like are graft-polymerized to the activated surface of the DLC film, thereby grafting polymers of such monomers to the surface of the DLC film. Consequently, there is obtained a base coated with a DLC film which is modified with polymers that are hardly detached therefrom.
