<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character code converting method for executing appropriate character code conversion without specifying an operation system and a computer identification code or the like. <P>SOLUTION: A feature of a character code assumed as a character code of data as a reading object is previously stored in a computer 1 as character code tables 1, 2, 3, ..., n. The feature of the character code with data of a file 7 as the reading object described and features of the character code tables 1, 2, 3, ..., n are compared by the computer 1 on the basis of the existence of the definition of a character corresponding to the character code, and the character code table j with the file 7 described is specified.
