PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid ejector which can correctly measure a viscosity of ink although it has a simple configuration, and to provide a cleaning method of a liquid ejector. SOLUTION: There are set a suction means 11 for sucking a liquid by a negative pressure from a liquid jetting head 30 by contacting a nozzle face 61, an air pressure measuring means 13 for measuring an air pressure in the suction means 11, a negative pressure extinction time measuring means for measuring a negative pressure extinction time after the suction means 11 stops the suction of the liquid before the air pressure in the suction means 11 becomes nearly equal to an atmospheric pressure, a viscosity decision means for deciding a viscosity of the liquid on the basis of negative pressure extinction time viscosity information which shows the relationship between the viscosity of the liquid and the negative pressure extinction time, and a negative pressure releasing time setting means 100 for setting a negative pressure releasing time on the basis of viscosity negative pressure releasing time information which shows the relationship between the negative pressure releasing time after the suction means 11 stops the suction of the liquid before the contact to the nozzle face 61 of the suction means 11 is released, and the viscosity.
