<p>In a variable phased valve lifter of an internal combustion engine, a roller lifter (10) is allowed to move along a constraining face of a constraining mechanism (13, 24) in a first direction (26), and the constraining mechanism (13, 24) is allowed to move freely in a second direction (25). As the roller lifter (10) moves through its arcuate path, the flat surface(s) (12) of the roller lifter (10) will slide across the constraining faces(s) of the constraining mechanism (13, 24), and end members (13a, 15a, 16a, 24a) of the constraining mechanism (13, 14) slide fore-and-aft in at least one stationary block (14). The roller lifter (10) is thus prevented from rotating about its longitudinal axis (27) as it moves in arcuate fashion in cooperation with the constraining mechanism (13, 24).</p> |
