An organic electroluminescent device (10) has substrate (11), anode (12) and cathode (14) on substrate, and organic layer (13) between anode and cathode. The cathode has electron injection layer (18) and protective layer (19) made of pure metal, metal alloy, or metal compound. The organic EL device can be used in a full-color display when the organic EL device is combined with color filters. The organic electroluminescent device comprises substrate, anode and cathode on substrate, and organic layer between the anode and cathode. The cathode has electron injection and protective layers made of pure metal, metal alloy, or metal compound. The electron injection layer has first and second surfaces on its opposite sides. The first surface faces the organic layer and the second surface faces away from the organic layer. The protective layer covers the second surface to protect the electron injection layer. |
