Sewing machine with a lubricating device

A sewing machine has a lubricant reservoir (18) located in sight of the operator. The base plate (10) incorporates a further lubricant reservoir (20) for the thread grip (22). The upper and lower lubricant reservoirs are linked by a wick inside a tube (32). The bottom reservoir is fed under capillary action. The lower reservoir has a float (34) which closes the inlet to the lower reservoir on reaching a given height. The upper reservoir has a fluid level indicator that gives an optical or audio warning when the lubricant falls below a predetermined level. The upper reservoir is integrated within or is located on the outer face of the side pillar.
