An apparatus for separating envelopes into two groups according to their dimensions comprises fingers 2, which are secured to a driven endless band 2a and which project beneath two substantially upright guide plates 1a 1b, and an endless belt 6 extending beneath upright guide plates 5a, 5b which are vertically aligned with the guide plates 1a, 1b. In operation, envelopes are dropped between the guide plates la, 1b and those 7a which pass between the fingers 2 are conveyed by the belt 6 between the guide plates 5a, 5b to a receptacle 8. Envelopes 9a which do not pass between the fingers 2 are conveyed to a transfer station 10 where they are engaged between an endless belt (101), Figs. 4-6 (not shown), and three endless bands (107-109) which convey them from the fingers 2 into a second receptacle. The endless band 2a is movable between guides (2m, 2f), Fig. 3 (not shown), and is provided with a series of apertures 2h for the reception of the fingers, the spacing between which may thereby be varied. The endless bands (107-108) are spring- urged towards the endless band (101) and their lower ends are at different heights whereby an envelope (9b), Fig. 5 (not shown), supported in the attitude shown, is engaged by the three bands substantially simultaneously.
