PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition having negative dielectric anisotropy, excellent low-temperature nematic stability, and high refractive anisotropy and to provide a liquid crystal display element, such as a VA type, using the same. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition comprises a compound selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by formula (1A), (1B), etc., and a biphenyl compound. In the formulae, R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>4</SP>are each a 1 to 10C alkyl group or a 2 to 10C alkenyl group; and Z<SP>1</SP>and Z<SP>2</SP>are each a linking group such as -CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>-.
