<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element which has simple member constitution, can be driven with a low voltage, and has a high display contrast, the display element being superior in bending resistance and in flexibility. <P>SOLUTION: The display element has opposite substrates and an electrolyte layer, containing silver or a compound including silver in a chemical structure between the opposite substrates, the electrolyte layer contains 0 to 1 mass % water.
