PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To constitute a side member structure for a vehicle which suitably exhibits two kinds of forms, i.e., the form in which energy of collision is absorbed by large speed-reduction acceleration of a vehicle body at a former half of the collision when the vehicle body collides from a front side, and the form in which energy of the collision is absorbed by small speed-reduction acceleration of the vehicle body at a latter half of the collision. SOLUTION: A space 6 for permitting displacement to a rear side of an intermediate part 4 of the side member 1 is provided between the intermediate part 4 of the side member 1 and a dash panel 5, and a restriction means 7 for restricting displacement of bending to the rear side of the intermediate part 4 of the side member 1 is provided. The energy of the collision is absorbed by compressing/destroying a front part 3 of the side member 1 at the former half of the collision and restriction function of the restriction means 7 is released at the latter half of the collision.
