PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the pulse voltage waveform of a discharge lamp starting device from being distorted by a corona discharge that could occur at the start of a discharge lamp.

SOLUTION: A discharge prevention member 25 is electrically connected to a terminal 73 at the grounding potential of a connector 6. The discharge prevention member 25 is disposed between a pulse transformer PT that generates a high voltage at the start of the discharge lamp and the terminal 73 of the connector 6. The jacket 22 of the pulse transformer PT and silicone resin 23 are packed between the discharge prevention member 25 and the pulse transformer PT and no air layer exists there, so that a corona discharge is prevented from occurring between the discharge prevention member 25 and the pulse transformer PT. Even if an air layer exists between the connectors 6, 7 when the pair of connectors 6, 7 are coupled together, no corona discharge occurs because the air layer is situated between the terminal 73 and the discharge prevention member 25 which are at the same electric potential.
