PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the energy saving performance and controllability by improving the operation efficiency as a whole and to prevent a problem that a compressor motor becomes inoperative by failure. SOLUTION: In this cooling device, a digital control refrigerant compressor 6 having a digital switching mechanism part 8 for switching a loading state for performing the refrigerant compression in operating the compressor motor 7 and an unloading state for releasing the refrigerant compression in operating the compressor motor 7, is used in a freezing cycle 5, a control system 9 is mounted to switch and control the digital switching mechanism part 8 on the basis of, at least, a temperature of cooling liquid W supplied to a cooled object M, to variably control the temperature of the cooling liquid W, and further an auxiliary control means 10 is mounted to control the temperature by switching on/off the compressor motor 7 when the digital switching mechanism part 8 can not be switched.
