PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hard carbon film coated tool, accurately discriminating between a used cutting edge and an unused cutting edge, and enough exhibiting excellent performance of a hard carbon film. SOLUTION: This hard carbon film coated tool 1 has a rake face 6 and a flank 7, wherein at least one layer of hard carbon film 3 is deposited on the surface of a substrate 2 having a cutting edge ridge 8 at the intersecting part of the rake face 6 and the flank 7. A titanium compound film 4 is deposited on the outermost surface of the hard carbon film coated tool 1, and at least the titanium compound film 4 of the cutting edge ridge 8 is removed to expose the hard carbon film 3.
