PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for checking a welding state, which easily and rapidly checks the penetration state of weld bead, the variation state of plate thickness, and the like at a weld zone formed by butt-welding. SOLUTION: When checking a welding state of a weld bead B formed by butt-welding a pair of plate materials 11, 13 from the downstream side of a heat input direction, a protrusion height a up to the tip end of the weld bead B protruding from the plate surface on the downstream side of the heat input direction is nondestructively measured. An effective plate thickness T is calculated from the protrusion height a, and the quality of the weld is determined by comparing the effective plate thickness T with a plate thickness T0of the plate material.
