A microscope has an objective lens for observation of a specimen, light-emitting diodes with different emission wavelengths, a wavelength multiplexing device that multiplexes light emitted from the light-emitting diodes, and an illumination optical system that forms the multiplexed light into an image on a rear focal plane of the objective lens. All the light-emitting diodes being in a positional relationship conjugate to a rear focus of the objective lens through the wavelength multiplexing device and the illumination optical system. The microscope also has a photometric device that measures light from the specimen, an image sensing device that senses an image of the specimen through the objective lens, and a power supply device that controls brightness of light emitted from the light-emitting diode on the basis of a photometric value obtained by the photometric device.
