Disclosed is a compact-sized honeycomb structural body with longer life which is excellent in mechanical strength and thermal response, thereby having high crack limit and excellent reliability. The honeycomb structural body is a columnar honeycomb structural body having a honeycomb structure wherein many through holes are arranged in the longitudinal direction while being separated by wall portions and either end of each through hole is sealed, and is characterized in that the volume Y (l) and the inlet-side open area ratio X (%) of the honeycomb structural body satisfy the following relation (1).
