The internal combustion engine with radial pistons is divided into a drive unit and a compression unit. The compression piston (11) assumes a circular shape in cross section. The working piston (5) in its leading flank (6) between bottom dead center (20) and top dead center (21) assumes a semi-circular shape in cross section. The working piston in its trailing flank (8) between bottom dead center and top dead center assumes a semi-circular base shape in cross section which is connected to an expansion flank (3) at top dead center.
