PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing apparatus capable of recording information in a recording medium with high density and high accuracy and reproducing the information.

SOLUTION: A recording and reproducing method and device are provided, using an optical recording medium wherein a mask layer whose refractive index is reversibly changed at prescribed temperature is disposed on a recording layer. The recording and reproducing method includes a step for emitting an optical beam along an optical axis toward a recording part of the recording layer and a step for irradiating a prescribed part of the mask layer crossing the optical axis of the optical beam with an electron beam to heat the mask up to a prescribed temperature or above and forming a gate part having a size which penetrates through the mask layer and does not transmit the light beam.
