PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a distortion correcting apparatus capable of employing an approximation in response to the height of an image at each pixel position for the approximation used for correcting distortion. SOLUTION: A selector 9 reads distortion data discretely stored in a distortion data memory 8 and provides the data to a signal processing section 5. The signal processing section 5 obtains an approximation denoting an image height-distortion curve on the basis of the given distortion data by each coordinate position and carries out distortion correction on the basis of the approximation.
