PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the head press mechanism of a thermal printer arranged such that a press indent is not generated in a platen roller by switching the pressure of a thermal head pressing the platen roller when printing is performed and not performed. SOLUTION: The head press mechanism 11 of a thermal printer comprises a platen roller 13 rotatable as rotation is transmitted from a drive source or a drive gear 23, and a thermal head 16 pressing against the platen roller 13 with a predetermined pressure. Pressure of the thermal head 16 can be switched by a switching means 20 such that a recording sheet is pressure held between the platen roller 13 and the thermal head 16 with a strong pressure when printing and a weak pressure is applied or no-load state is brought about when the recording sheet is not printed.
