TURBOCHARGER WITH HYDRODYNAMIC FOIL BEARINGS

A turbocharger (50) includes a foil bearing assembly (100) mounted in a center housing (90) between a compressor (60) and a turbine (70) of the turbocharger (50). The bearing assembly (100) forms a unit installable into the center housing (90) from one end thereof, and the center housing is a one-piece construction. The bearing assembly (100) includes a foil thrust bearing assembly (160) disposed between two foil journal bearings (120, 140). The journals foil are mounted in annular bearings carriers (122, 142) fixedly mounted in the center housing (90). A radially inner portion of a thrust disk (162) of the thrust bearing assembly (160) is captured between a shaft (52) and a shaft sleeve (52c) of the turbocharger (50). The center housing (90) defines cooling air passages (94) for supplying cooling air to the foil bearings, and optionally includes a water jacket (200) for circulating engine cooling through the center housing (90).
