In a process to operate an automotive heating system, the system has a burner with a fuel supply, an ignition unit and a control unit. The heater is regulated during operation as it receives a combination of fuel and air. The burner undergoes continued regulation during an interval in which the fuel supply is interrupted. During the interrupted fuel supply, unburned fuel is evaporated in the burner housing in which it has accumulated, accompanied by intermittent operation of the ignition unit.
