PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize appropriate setting of a knocking detection zone, without receiving influence from a spark plug discharging time, dispersion of combustion periods, secular change, or the like. SOLUTION: Ion current generated during combustion is read in, and the peak value of the ion current is detected (S3). After the peak value of the ion current is detected, a starting gate of a knocking detection zone is set (S4), and the ion current and a previously set slice level are compared (S5). After the ion current is brought to the same level as the slice level or lower than that, a finishing gate of the knocking detection zone is set (S6).
